How to Reduce Stress on the Job

  • Apr 24, 2020

Here are some interesting stats for you. More than 157 million Americans are part of the U.S. workforce. Considering that number, did you know that workplace stress is responsible for up to $190 billion in annual U.S. healthcare costs? Pretty incredible!

Millions of employees are affected by stress and anxiety each year, hindering their ability to perform in the office. Even the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) deems stress as a “hazard of the workplace.”

So, if you are currently squeezing onto your stress ball and clenching your jaw, these helpful tips on reducing stress in the office might be beneficial to you.

A Little Exercise Never Hurt

Even if it’s a walk around the building or opting to go to the furthest restroom from your desk, it’s so crucial to stand up, stretch, and get those steps in. Try and stand every 30-minutes. You can even set a reminder on your phone or Fitbit that alerts you to get moving.

Outside of the office, it’s always beneficial to go to your local gym or even sign up for a new exercise class you’ve never tried. ClassPass is a great app to use when looking for classes around your area. From spin to aerial yoga, there are so many ways for you to work out each week!

Check, Check, Done

When in doubt, always write down tasks that you need to complete. Sure, all of us create mental to-do lists, but it can be so easy to forget if it’s not written down.

By being organized at work, writing down your tasks, and making sure nothing slips through the cracks, your stress will reduce substantially. Being organized also means less clutter and more time to get everything completed.

Break Out of Your Shell

Even if you’re not a social butterfly, it’s still so important to have one friend at work who you trust. Even if you go pick up lunch together or need to have a mini venting session, by surrounding yourself with positive people who are always willing to lend an ear, your stress and anxiety can be decreased tremendously.

Keep Perfectionism in Check

If you try to be perfect, professionally and personally, you will drive yourself insane. It’s definitely a great quality to be a high achiever, but if you stress over the little things (some that you have no control over) you are only going to be more stressed out and overwhelm your coworkers.

Strive to be your very best, but don’t worry about making mistakes – that’s how you learn! Make sure to also reward yourself for small achievements. If you completed a project the day before it’s due, go get a manicure or check out the latest blockbuster film. Work can be consuming, so it’s important to embrace your hard work and give yourself a pat on the back every now and then.

Don’t sweat the small stuff! In a fast-paced society, it is so easy to become overwhelmed. Your overall wellbeing should be a top priority, which means following the above tips for a happier and healthier you.
